Covering Up the Bruises
May 20, 2009

I wanted to do a painting touching on the topic of domestic violence.
I’ve never personally been abused but I know that abuse is widespread upon women my age. When it comes to the victims in these situations, the issue should be taken up without judgment.
I’m beginning to paint more women. I want to depict them in a variety of lights – heroes, victims, rebels, proud, scared, pretty, ugly.
In this painting, she is clearly a victim.
She’s attempting to hide her bruises with make-up, an attempt many women make everyday.
I’m still working on a title for this. I’m learning that the title is a very important part of a piece of art. Still working on it.
