Live Painting at NABJ

June 25, 2012

This past Thursday was my first time going to New Orleans. I didn’t really have much time to sight-see, check out the live music, or do all types of rambunctious stuff that I would have loved to do. Philly 360 held a reception at the National Association of Black Journalists convention, and as one their Creative Ambassadors, I was asked to paint portraits of Jeff Bradshaw and Marsha Ambrosious.
I had a good time. Met some folks. Ate a fried shrimp po boy. Hung out with Jeff Bradshaw, who has been added to my list of ‘funniest people I know’.

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Oil on Canvas, 2010

So, Janelle Monae is pretty amazing.
I saw her live for the first time a couple weeks ago here in Philadelphia.
And I was blown away. Blooown away.
I did this portrait in about 2 hours. I try to paint pretty quickly when I’m making these time-lapse videos. I’ll probably go back into the painting later to just clean it up – add more details, fix anything that needs to be fixed, check the proportions of her face, etc…

Check out the video!

This party is dope.
I had such a good time the first time I went, that I asked to be apart of it.
So, on February 6, I’ll be painting live at Donuts are Forever 4.

I’m excited. :)

Painted live at Felappreciation at The Arts Garage in Philadelphia.

This painting was done in about an hour and a half. The color scheme is different from my usual palette. These colors have a retro feel – muted teal, greenish brown, and bluish gray. It was an experiment and I’m pleased with the outcome. I’ll use similar color schemes in the future.
